Making polymer clay beads is fun, easy, cheap, and even makes a great activity for kids on a rainy afternoon or as a birthday party craft. Handmade Gifts are a great wait to show appreciation to family members, friends, and loved ones! There are many people who prefer handmade gifts for their uniqueness and the author’s personal footprint.

Winter is coming and if your gift list is long and your budget is small here are some simple polymer clay beads or great Handmade Gifts that you can make for the girls on the list.

It is time to start the gift making for the Holiday season. And you’ll have very nice ones under 5$. I already started 🙂

For making this simple polymer clay beads you need few different colors of clay and a knock for the skewer or a toothpick.

First step you have to cut the block of clay in equal parts so that your beads will have the same part. If it seems hart to make them the same size you can buy wood beads from the crafts stores and only cover them with clay. I prefer to create them from scratch. To create spherical beads, roll each bead individually between your palms to shape them into spheres

This are my simple polymer clay beads:

basic polymer clay cane tutorial

For the beginners in the polymer clay art, I come with a simple idea: a basic polymer clay cane. You can use this tutorial to create polymer clay jewelry covered in canes. You can combine multiple colors and the effect is guaranteed!

For this basic polymer clay cane tutorial you will need:
– 2 colors of polymer clay
– pasta machine
– cutter

Step 1

Choose a color of polymer clay and mix it with your hands to avoid creating air bubbles. When it has an average consistency you have to pass it through the pasta machine and create a perfect flat sheet. Take the second color and repeat the process.

Step 2

Take the fist sheet and cut a square out off it. Take the square and putt it on the second sheet. Then cut the excess of the clay. It is easier with a square cutter, but I guess you are a beginner and you don’t have a square cutter.

Step 3

To prevent having one color concentrated in the middle, you have to slowly cut one edge of the sheet. Use the following photo as an example. Roll the sheet starting from the thinner edge. You now have a simple polymer clay cane and of course you can use it like that, but you can stay one more minute and have a more impressive one.

Step 4

Take the cylinder you created the step before and with the thick edge cutter press it in the half until you get to the center of the cylinder. Twist the cylinder and repeat the process. Now your cylinder is almost speared in two pieces. You have to repeat the process with the think edge of the cutter for 3 times for each half. Below are step by step photos of the process.

Polymer clay mokume gane cane – DIY step by step tutorial

We continue the series of tutorial with a polymer clay mokume gane cane. This is not a new technique, but one with unlimited options. I hope that you’ll learn something useful for yourself and for your jewelry.

For these tutorial you will need the next products in the photo. If you are not a beginner and you have a pasta machine, I recommend you to use it when creating thin sheets.

Tools you’ll need:
– few colors of polymer clay
– cutter
– rolling pin
– toothpicks
– molds
– pasta machine (optional)

Polymer clay mokume gane cane - DIY step by step tutorial

First of all, we’ll create polymeric clay thin layers, one of every stack of each other. We’ll obtain a pile of multi-colored layers. To make the layers thinner, pressed them with the rolling pin, then cut them into half and put them one over another and repeat the process until eventually the layer are of the desired thickness. The thinner the layers, the more beautiful it will turn out.

Polymer clay mokume gane cane - DIY step by step tutorial

Make through holes and cuts. I use the tools for this: an old pen, a toothpick, a curved metal strip. Large holes fill with scraps of polymer clay.  For advanced pattern of polymer clay mokume gane cane you can use gradient sheets or silver / gold leaf.

After cutting the shapes , you will need to squeeze the block, removing excess of air, trimming it with your fingers. The smaller it becomes, the more complex pattern will be. To use it you will need to cut thin layers with a sharp knife and apply it on a one color sheet (for a better use of the cane).

Polymer clay mokume gane cane - DIY step by step tutorial

Cut the shape  you want through the sheet. You can use molds or you can drew a shape and cut out a paper and then with the cutter just follow the edges of the work-piece. Do not forget to turn the work-piece because the earrings should be symmetrical.

If you’ll create earrings, don’t forget to make hols before baking. This is how the sheets look after baking.
